The Stories We Perpetuate: What We Teach and Why and How We Should Elevate the Diminished Voices of our History
Join experts in education, history, curriculum design and textbook writing as we examine a path towards cultural competence among our students.
This event features an impressive panel that includes Dr. Gwenn Lei, Coordinator, Reading-Language Arts/History-Social Science, San Mateo County Office of Education; Dr. Rachel B. Reinhard, Director, UC Berkeley History Social Science Project; Marissa McGee, Coordinator for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for MPCSD and Ravenswood; and Michelle Betancourt, MPCSD Instructional Coach. The panel will be facilitated by MPCSD's Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services Jammie Behrendt. These experts in education, history, curriculum design and textbook writing will discuss a path towards cultural competence among our students. Cultural competence means that students are secure in their knowledge and understanding of their own culture AND are developing fluency in at least one other culture. As part of MPCSD’s commitment to antiracism, this panel discussion will look at the common historical narratives we teach in our K-8 schools and begin to unpack the bias ingrained in so much of the available curriculum.
VIA ZOOM:  Wednesday, March 16, 2022 @ 6:30 pm.   To view a recording of the discussion, you can click here: https://vimeo.com/689400629
